Quick Note: Make sure you look at what time of year to travel. The typhoons can wipe out towns in a matter of days. Also the night busses are an interesting experience, sometimes it is worth spending a little more.

Sapa

  • Lots of rice paddies and beautiful views.

Ha Noi

  • Lo prison – very interesting
  • Night market
  • Temple of the Jade Mountain – Ngocson temple

HaLong Bay

  • 3 day boat trip through the Hanoi backpackers – young group with lots of drinking games makes it a great way to meet people to continue your travels with
  • Cat ba island, loads of activities and tours

Phong Nha

  • Phong Nha Farmstay – its a little out of the way, but designed to give you a more local experience
  • Hire bikes or Motorbikes – go for a massive ride around the local communities
  • Eat at a local house which is literally farm to table in front of your eyes
  • 2 different caves – one you go into on a boat and the second is the a really massive beautiful dry cave. Both are 2 of the largest in the world.
  • Phong Nha national park

DMZ tunnels

  • Village built underground for town to live in during the Vietnam War – historically interesting

Hoi An

  • Beautiful village town loads of local shops
  • Get clothes made – Best place to get quality clothes made in Vietnam. Plan to stay 3 or more days if you want to have clothes made.
  • Restaurant recommendation – ‘Blue Dragon’
  • Ask at front desk of hotel about local pancake restaurant (only locals go there) – Delicious savoury pancakes   

Nha Trang

  • Fun party place – ‘why not bar?’
  • Boat cruises
  • Vin Pearl island – giant amusement park
  • Mud bathes – definitely worth a visit

Dalat

  • Cannoning with groovy gecko – abseiling down waterfalls and hiking through the rain forest
  • Loads of tours – flower farms and vineyards
  • Restaurant recommendation- ‘Wild Sunflower’

Mui Ne

  • Beach town perfect for hanging out – try to make sure you are in the lively part of the beach so it is easy to walk around at night.
  • Kite surfing and surfing
  • Jeep tour – local fishing beach, sand dunes, fairy stream (canyon)
  • Restaurant recommendation – Lobster dinner on the beach at a large street food restaurant. Can see it from the beach. Go left along the beach (facing ocean) from Mr Lee’s kite surfing school

HCM

  • Beware of taxi scam – watch out for them driving around in circles and using clickers and horns to increase the taxi fare
  • Mekong Delta day trip – bus, boat, crocodiles, coconut lolly factory, bee farm, snakes and long boat all on the one tour
